Before Super Bowl LVIII, we have NFL Honors. Below are my picks for some of the major awards.
MVP: Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson had the best season of his career by throwing the ball better than he ever has and continuing to showcase his outstanding running ability. With the help of OC Todd Monken, Jackson thrived and showed that he can still be even better moving forward.
DPOY: T.J. Watt
T.J. Watt led the NFL in sacks once again with nineteen sacks. His disruption and presence on the field changes everything for this Steelers defense. The difference when he is off the field is astronomical and they struggled mightily without him.
OPOY: Tyreek Hill
Tyreek Hill had a truly dominant season. He would have had a real shot to eclipse 2,000 receiving yards had he stayed healthy throughout the season. Defenses knew he was the focal point of the Dolphins offense and still had no answer for him all season long.
OROY: C.J. Stroud
C.J. Stroud was excellent as a rookie and looked like he belonged immediately. His accuracy, poise, and decision making were phenomenal all season long. One of the most impressive parts of his season was that he only threw five interceptions!
DPOY: Kobie Turner
Kobie Turner was a big part of a Rams defense that played better than most expected. He was very disruptive from the interior and was able to generate nine sacks. Turner and Aaron Donald are a scary duo for opposing offensive lines in the future.
Comeback Player of the Year: Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield surpassed all expectations coming into this season. He had arguably the best year of his career and set himself up for a nice contract this season. He developed a good chemistry with his receivers and a return to Tampa Bay makes sense.
Coach of the Year: DeMeco Ryans
DeMeco Ryans did a tremendous job as a rookie head coach and transforming the Texans from a 3-13-1 record to 10-7 and winning the AFC South. He also led Houston to a dominant win over the Browns in the Wil Card round of the playoffs. With a young core of solid players, Ryans should be able to lead this team for years to come.
Assistant Coach of the Year: Mike Macdonald
Mike Macdonald did a tremendous job leading the Ravens as the best defense in the league. Even more impressive was being able to accomplish this with less heralded players that were not in high demand. He was able to get players like Justin Madubuike, Kyle Van Noy, and Jadeveon Clowney to have productive seasons and thrive in his system.
